Motorcycle Dealer Bonds in Your State
If your dealer application asks for a motorcycle dealer bond, start with your state and the kinds of vehicles you sell. Those two details decide which bond you need. Ashton Agency can help you work through the requirement and request a quote.

What Is a Motorcycle Dealer Bond
A motorcycle dealer bond protects eligible customers if a dealer breaks the licensing rules and causes a covered loss. Each state’s law and bond form spell out who can make a claim and what is covered.
The bond is a promise with three parties: your dealership, the surety company that stands behind it, and Ashton, the agency that arranges it. If the surety pays a valid claim, the dealership is expected to pay the surety back.
Who Needs One and What It Covers
Bond amounts depend on your state and the vehicles you sell. A motorcycle-only dealership can have different requirements than one that also sells cars.
Ashton writes motorcycle dealer bonds in the eight states below. These are the bond amounts we have on file, and state requirements can change, so confirm yours with us before you apply.
| State | Bond amount |
|---|---|
| Alaska | $25,000 |
| Idaho | $10,000 |
| New Mexico | $12,500 |
| North Dakota | $10,000 |
| South Carolina | $15,000 |
| South Dakota | $5,000 |
| Texas | $50,000 |
| Utah | $10,000 |

Frequently Asked Questions
Which states do you write motorcycle dealer bonds in?
Alaska, Idaho, New Mexico, North Dakota, South Carolina, South Dakota, Texas, and Utah. If your state isn’t on the list, call us and we’ll tell you what we can do.
If Texas requires $50,000, do I pay $50,000?
No. The $50,000 is the bond amount, the limit the state sets for your license. What you pay is a separate premium, quoted for your dealership.
What if I also sell cars?
Tell us. A dealership that sells both can fall under different requirements than a motorcycle-only one, and we can help you sort out which bond your license needs.
Does one bond cover every dealership location?
That depends on your state. Tell us how many locations you have and we’ll confirm what your state requires.
Can I keep operating if the bond is canceled?
Your license depends on an active bond, so line up replacement coverage before the current one ends. Your state’s rules decide what happens if it lapses.
